What the Currency Converter does

This tool converts an amount between more than 30 world currencies using live exchange rates fetched from a public data source. Enter a figure, pick the currencies you are converting from and to, and the equivalent value appears straight away. It is handy for planning a trip, comparing prices on an overseas shopping site, sizing up an invoice in a foreign currency or simply understanding a headline exchange rate.

How exchange rates work here

The rates shown are mid-market reference rates, typically refreshed daily. The mid-market rate sits halfway between the buy and sell prices and is the figure you see quoted in the news, which makes it the fairest number for comparison.

In practice, banks, card networks and exchange bureaus add a margin or fee on top, so the amount you actually receive will usually be a little less than the mid-market figure. Treat the results here as an accurate guide for planning and comparison rather than the exact amount of a specific transaction.

How to use it

Type the amount, choose the source and target currencies, and read the converted value. You can reverse the direction or change either currency to see a different pairing. The live rate lookup needs an internet connection, but once the rate is loaded the conversion maths runs locally in your browser, so adjusting the amount is instant.
