Word Counter
Count words, characters, sentences, and more in real time.
What the Word Counter does
As you type or paste text, this tool counts your words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs and lines in real time. There is nothing to submit and no limit on length β the totals update instantly as you write, and your text never leaves your browser. It is a quick, distraction-free way to keep an eye on the size of whatever you are writing.
Students use it to hit essay word limits, writers and journalists use it to fit a brief, marketers use it to keep a meta description or tweet within range, and editors use it to gauge reading length at a glance.
Why character and word counts both matter
Different platforms measure differently. Search engines truncate page titles and meta descriptions by character count, and social networks cap posts by characters, so the character figures are what you watch when writing for those. Academic and publishing briefs, on the other hand, are almost always specified in words.
Sentence and paragraph counts are useful for readability. Long runs of text with very few sentence breaks tend to read as dense, while a healthy spread of shorter sentences and paragraphs is easier to follow β so these numbers are a handy structural check, not just a tally.
How to use it
Type directly into the box or paste in an existing document, and watch the statistics update live. Because all processing is local, you can safely paste confidential or unpublished work without it being uploaded or stored. Clear the box to start again whenever you like β there is no sign-up and no usage cap.
